Pout and Grin

June 10th, 2008

At an American PR firm, Wang Xiaodong rocks the long cardigan and works mainly on Vidal Sassoon.  Song Ying, in media, just got back from studying in Korea and she says that the air is worse in Beijing now but the people are much more fashionable.  Does that mean that overall things are improving aesthetically?  In any case, Beijing girls still don’t care as much about appearances as Korean ones, who literally all have had plastic surgery.

I like the composition of this picture: the wall, which looks to be in a general state of decay typical of my hometown, has the appearance of a watercolor painting. While the monochromatic color scheme is reflected in the jacket and pants of the couple, a tiny, seductive splash of pink and purple can be spotted in the undershirt. Everyone looks fashionable and intelligent…nice!

Yes, the photography is greatly improved. Is that one of the new cloth shopping bags or just an old fashioned plastic bag. Does anyone aspiring to fashion of futurism really carry plastic bags any more……

@ REM - I’m sure that anyone who frequently views this blog has noticed that I like the walls of Beijing. Some times I think this project is really about the walls in the hutongs. Soon they will not be in such disrepair. They will look new and very presentable. I love how they look in decay, so I am recording that. Of course, they also provide a good backdrop for showing off the closes.

@ Khavurta - It was a cloth bag. They are really enforcing those fees on plastic bags, at least in some locations. Young people like the ones in the photo tend to be quite environmentally aware.

People in Beijing are much more fashionable?

That is so untrue! People can’t even simply dress up tidy. But she’s right if you count out the millions of migrant workers and only look at the recently established upper class spitting from a Mecedez.

i totally agree with REM, this wall is an exceptional beauty, it even reminds me of paintings of wlliam turner (http://sudelblatt.wordpress.com/2007/08/04/fischer-auf-see-william-turner/)

@KJ - I think she was saying that people are more fashionable than they used to be. I guess I didn’t express that clearly, but that things have improved is hard to deny, I think.

Finally see the photo got published, it’s taken on late March. Anyway, it looks good, although I dont like the Pout! but it’s fun to see the title.

Thanks and wishes to run into you somewhere again in Beijing!
