She was at what increasingly seems like the world’s most touristy art district for an opening at Pace Gallery, 798.

Sanlitun has been Beijing’s main nightlife district for nearly as long as their has been nightlife in post-opening China. Over the years, the area has become more and more gentrified and sanitized. Sanlitun Village, Beijing’s first outdoor mall, with a huge number of shops ranging from Uniqlo to Reiss. The trendiest boutique hotel in the city, the Opposite House is also here. Sanlitun, the CBD, embassy quarter, and residences of most foreigners are in vast Chaoyang District.
Queenie of the Jungle
Cat has been so unbelievably popular in Beijing in the last year. I even commissioned a leopard print dress shirt, that I wear with a repp tie and suit, just to attempt to keep up with the trend. Here is Time Out editor Queenie, prowling through the jungle that is Beijing. Can she be dominant here?
Characterful Gams
Jel was at 798, this time in very expressive tights.

帅哥 at Get it Louder
Shuaige (帅哥)means handsome guys.
At the festival of creativity, Get it Louder, were Wang Peng and his relative and partner in photography.
Creative Cutter
Lin Lin wore a dress she had made from men’s pajamas at the first night of Get It Louder, a major exhibition of the works of young creatives in art, design, music, film, and literature.
Pang Kuan Smashing an Apple Monitor
If the Creators Project had a climax, for me it was the smashing of an Apple monitor by Pang Kuan (庞宽), keyboardist and singer for New Pants, at the climax of the song “‘Sex, Drugs, Internet”. Judging by the visuals on the LED behind, the smashing had something to do with anger related to sex and the internet, but it seemed an ironic act at a project showcasing the meeting of design and technology. Though I like the music, the visuals were the main highlight of the show for me.
Cold Couples at Creators Project
Over the last three days, Beijing has finally stopped being stiflingly humid. People have clearly been itching to get out their warmer clothes. Vice‘s Creators Project was an opportunity to show off the coats, scarves, and hats that have been laying dormant for the last half year.
I have always found people in China more sensitive to cold (and less to heat) than in the States or other Western countries. I was sweating in a cardigan at the same event.

Factory Boy
In a vintage factory uniform made in Beijing’s Fengtai district, Meng was back to the assembly line his weekend for the Creators Project, which took place in a range of former parts factories and warehouses at Beijing’s 798. Sponsored by Vice Magazine and Intel, the Creators Project was on its final stop after events in New York, London, and Seoul.
Another Party at Vega’s
The last party was the media event. This time the hipster masses came to celebrate the opening of Vega Wang’s shop.
And here is designer Zhang Chi ready for the return of heavy heat. Beijing has been in the mid-thirties again.

An Aura of Éclat
I always wish for managers of hotels, bars, and restaurants to have a certain glamour and something approaching a distinct personal style. Joe Ho and Francois Vanvi (above) are the only two hotel general managers I have encountered here in Beijing who look a bit like the hotel GM of my dreams. Francois was born in Paris and grew up there and in Hong Kong. He has been in Beijing for several years and is about to take over the opening of a new boutique property, the Hotel Éclat Beijing, in that new triangular structure called ParkView Green. Recently, I asked Francois a few questions about style and being a GM.

Two-Tone Brogues
At the Vega Wang Media Opening
Photos by Teresa Yeh
The sparkling rosé was quite nice. Madame Figaro editor Zhang Shen was among the glamorous media guests, but she was drinking water out of a champagne flute. She had to head back to the office after the party.
