Mega Mengmeng just appeared on the Facehunter. He didn’t seem to get as many shots in Beijing as he does in other cities. Maybe it was too cold or perhaps there are not enough hipster promenades in the city. Here is Ritchie also.

Amber and Nisha, a DJ pair from London called the Broken Hearts, flew in for the event. They do a lot of fashion parties. Interestingly, I ran into them today at the La Specola, Europe’s oldest Museum of Zoology and Natural History. It’s not the most frequently visited museum here in Florence.

Paris, NYC, and Beijing fashion weeks, the Benetton shooting in NYC, the multitude of fashion parties in Beijing…I’ve been to a number of fashion events over the last year, but none were as enjoyable as the last couple days in Florence. LUISAVIAROMA has been a great host, but it is not just owing to them. I think the main factors are the city itself and the particular mix of bloggers attending.
This has been the most interesting stop in Florence so far. Last night’s party was here though tonight is supposed to be in an even hipper establishment.
Roberto really outdid himself. The church housing the excess has not been touched but the entire place is pimped out in the distinctive style of the designer.
I had a tiring but very educational day of being photographed at the FIRENZE4EVER 2nd Edition blogger’s event put on by LUISAVIAROMA. For this shoot, I was both model and stylist. The original plan was to do 10 distinct looks using the newest collection of items that are about to go on sale at LUISAVIAROMA’s shop in Florence and at their online store, but we only got to three looks. Just that – selecting, changing, and photographing – took about four hours, which was all the allotted time we had.
Above, in my own clothes, I am with Nicola, my assistant for the day who was definitely more tired out than I was. I will be putting the photoshoot up here over the next couple days.
Had an fun, interesting, sometimes frustrating day of shooting at LUISAVIAROMA. Follow my experiences here on Stylitems.

Sorry, just taking a while getting these photos up, since I am rather busy here in Florence. Here are more boys from the CdG opening in Sanlitun.
In a sea of bitchy, shallow PR types, Tommy (above) stands out as one of the most genuine, friendly and intelligent of the bunch.

I should have had these photos up a while back, but have been rather busy with magazine affairs. Together with partner I.T., Comme des Garçons just opened a rather large store in Sanlitun North. Rei Kawakubo made a rare appearance and some of her comments are here.
Above, Triple-Major‘s Ritchie Chan was charmingly boyish as always.

In Beijing, the most interesting fashion megatrend was Chinese products and styles. Several related trends occurring concurrently gave the impression that Beijingers wanted to find new ways of adding a Chinese touch to their own unique style of dress. Whether it was retro schooldays, Northeastern fabrics, incorporating traditional elements in modern ensembles, or wearing Chinese designers, the emphasis for young local hipsters and some resident foreigners was incorporating elements of China.

Trends that in the West are retro, alluding to a certain era in our shared experience or that of our parents, are often completely new to China. “Camel is back” or “we’re stuck in the ’80s again” doesn’t really have the same resonance. Last time camel was popular, China might not have yet had fashion magazines (most are post-2000). So when girls all over Beijing start wearing cap toes, bi-tonals, tasseled loafers, and generally aspiring to be feminine dandies, it seems fresh. Sure, they are following a global trend that is already somewhat played out in the West, but in China it feels new because it is not retro and does not carry the same associations.

Fired by eco-friendliness, economy and the need for something special, the savviest Beijing hipsters have proclaimed consignment shops and thrift stores to be kosher shopping destinations. Of course, most of the time, this means hitting Williamsburg, Brick Lane, or American Ebay. Only abroad can a wide range of quality secondhand goods be found at reasonable prices, though there are some secondhand markets in Beijing as well as shops specializing in imported vintage.
For the first couple of years of Stylites, a reoccurring problem was that girls I wished to photograph were often accompanied by rather dowdy males. These males were often very protective of their girlfriends, not letting them be photographed. The guys appearing here were rarely accompanied by girls. Recently the boyfriends have started to catch up.
