On the Benetton It’s My Time blog, I have created a hopefully amusing little game that asks you to match the shoes of people who have been on stylites with their profession. Though I’m not sure what the meaning of it all is, I do believe you can make character judgements on the basis of footwear.
Over on the Benetton “It’s My Time” blog, I posted a photo of a man who represents the next generation of the self-made global cognitive elite. Anatole has such a mixture of ethnicities, homes, thoughts, and skills that he is in a great position to guide the multinationals and international organizations of tomorrow. Concurrently, he shows a curious conservatism that either is a warning that change for good will not be achieved easily or a reassurance that the things worth preserving will remain.
For the last year, I have been getting contacted by parties looking to advertise nearly every week. I rejected these requests every time, responding that this was a non-commercial site or that their products didn’t match the image of Stylites. Now, I have decided to allow advertising. There are costs involved with running the site; the biggest one is, of course, my time.
Please click here or on the panel above to find out more about advertising on Stylites. Consulting services are also available.
So pretty, they could easily be as attractive as the NYC ones if they only dressed a little better, but the looks that hit me the moment I exit the plane run the gambit from mediocre to heinous.

I am so anxious for it to end. Winter is my favorite time. In fact, I would choose year-round winter if it meant odious summer would cease to exist. Beijingers, however, are more opposed to the cold than I am. Being unstylish is excusable in such supposedly savage weather and wearing a overstuffed, synthetic coat is seen as justified given the supposedly extreme cold. I was always under the impression that winter was a very stylish time. One can wear all sorts of different scarves, elegant cinched-waist wool coats, and dramatic boots. Heat is more the enemy of style since it reduces the amount that can be worn. I suspect that wool coats are perceived as being a bit oldmanish – or they are too expensive.
Of course, it is usually the heavy hat plus coat combo that keeps me warm. As has been noted by many observers, hats are barely worn at all here, even on the coldest days. Chinese tradition places more importance on the legs and feet; the head is virtually irrelevant.

I just arrived back in Beijing and regular updates on Stylites will start soon. Sorry for the interruption. I was back in the States for my father’s 90th birthday.
May all of your oddest, most dazzling, fantasies become reality in 2010.
Sorry for the slow down in posts. It is the holiday season now and I go whole weekends without the internet.
Dear Stylites Viewers,
Have a blessed Christmas this year! I am by the beach in Sarasota, Florida, which is lovely, though not terribly Christmas-like. Anyway, it is amazing that I was in Beijing just yesterday.
Best Wishes,
Nels
Qi Gang (ç¥åˆš) created a remarkable show for Secfashion. There was a bit of the jungle (with an actual stuffed wild cat in a model’s arm), a bit of Midsummer Night’s Dream meets The East is Red, and a large dose of high-octane glamour. I should think Qi Gang will be one of the main lights on the fashion scene for years to come.
It’s going to be raining men. Come chillier times, I have a preference for men’s attire, and over the last few days, my lens has been more drawn to those of the male persuasion. Gents benefit from fashions that don’t reveal skin, just as the deadly sex looks appealing while displaying legs, cleavage, shoulders and all those other delectables.
Last night, a senior fashion editor based here commented that Stylites rejects all but the the young and the slim. I always try to find stylish older people, but it is tough. When they exist, they are usually in restaurants or in cars on the way to dining, but more comments on this later.
The idea that I reject weightier people had not crossed my mind. It might be true although I might plead that Beijing lacks a sizable overweight demographic. Also, note that I display no addiction to conventional Chinese beauties – others have complained that there are not enough beauties on my blog. Of course, I might just be photographing those I rate as beauties.
I really should have figured out a way to host this site in China, because access has suddenly gotten tough again. Please accept my apologies for the more sporadic updates.
