My Photos on Taobao.com – 我的照片在淘å®ç½‘
Some things are inevitable. Recently, I saw some photos from Stylites on Taobao.com’s “Men’s Channel”, but my consent was not given first, and no attribution was made. The title of the post is “Trendy Beijing Guys in the Eyes of a Foreigner [using mildly pejorative term]”. Also, many of these pics have appeared on www.thebeijinger.com and That’s Beijing, a local magazine for which I formally do freelance work. I can understand that Taobao’s Men’s Channel might be interested in my pictures. However, I would hope that they would at least mention the origin of the photos. I gave the editor an email discussing this issue, but, after several days, he has still not responded.

Making Chinese Characters Readable – 解决乱ç 的问题
I will now be providing Chinese translation of Stylites, though there has not yet been time to make a formal announcement of this change.
On some browsers, Chinese appears as squiggles. In this case in “View” go to “Character Encoding” and select “Unicode”. This will fix the problem.

Fashion Trend Digest story on Stylites
Fashion Trend Digest, based out of Shanghai, did a story on me and Stylites, or I should say that they featured a piece that I wrote about myself. The piece is in Chinese, and my girlfriend, Yuanyuan, was nice enough to heavily edit it for me.
Happy Chinese New Year
I wasn’t in China this time, but I’m sure it was an overwhelming experience for all those who were. With its fireworks and blasts, in the past I found that Chinese New Year brought me close to experiencing a warzone. So I hope everyone who was in China enjoyed the carnage.
Thanks to Viewers…
Thanks for your continued support despite less frequent updates over the last week. In Iran, I have had much less access to the internet. I often connect through an old-fashioned dial-up modem. Keep checking though; the updates will still be daily. Thanks.
First Day in Tehran
Yep, quite a distance from Beijing. Not much time to update now. I was expecting people to be more conservatively dressed. There are a lot of brightly colored scarves with dyed hair revealed in front. The men wear suprisingly tight jeans.
That’s Beijing February is Out!
Please check my column and street style photos in the February issue of That’s Beijing! It is hot off the press!
Trip to the Middle East
Updates have been less frequent in the last couple of weeks because I have been very busy with my day job, and because the frigid weather reduces the number of stylish people.
Over the next three weeks updates will likely be still more sporadic. I will be traveling through the Middle East over and may have limited access to the internet during visits to remote historic sites, probably while staying in hostels lacking wireless. When I have the chance, I will post photos I have taken recently.
Hits on Stylites have spiked recently and I recommend that all new viewers enjoy the archives. Street photos are arranged by area in the categories to the right. The best photos are to be found in “Nanluoguxiang” and “Xidan” though “Dongsi” also has some good ones.
Company Trip
I’m on a company trip at moment, so I haven’t really been able to update the site. Please do start checking back as there will be new photos soon.
China Daily Profiles Stylites
China Daily profiled Stylites and me in its lifestyle section. I think the article is quite good, but I look like a bit silly in the photo. I’m glad they included this quote: “With people in China, there is not much of a knowledge of rules, [so] if they don’t care, why should I?”
Better City, Better Life
The theme of Shanghai Expo ’10 “Better City, Better Life,” will lead artists, designers and others to explore the relationship between the city and countryside, man and nature. As urban space becomes even more important and a smaller and smaller percentage of Chinese live in rural settings, the question of how to make that space effective and pleasant will be ever more important. This piece from Shanghai Daily discusses the recent show “Imagination of Expo 2010” that showcased all kinds of imaginative new designs that try to better urban life. It will be interesting to track the fashion ideas that appear at Expo 2010.
Acupuncture Party
Happy New Year!
I took a few style photos at the Acupuncture party out in 798 and I will be posting those here today, as well as some other interesting material.
