Meng Yue (åŸçŽ¥)adores all things Japanese, and her foreign name is Maruko. From Beijing, she is attending university in Nanjing. She was with two friends who have the exact same hair color as she does, but her style and feel was a bit sweeter than theirs.

Shots taken in Beijing’s famous hutongs, the historic alleyways that wind through the center of China’s capital. The hutong area in the center of Beijing is the largest continuous stretch of historic cityscape in any major Chinese city.
Red, Black and Blue
An editor for 1626, which has covered this blog before, wearing a vintage dress.
White, Blacks and Coordinated Reds
The look is taut and professional but langorous, graceful but meticulous. I like the peaked lapel sport coat with sleeves rolled up on this editor at a very well-known fashion magazine.
Visual Merchandiser
Based in Shanghai, Edison is a visual merchandiser. Edison is a native of Nanjing, where he studied fashion design as an undergraduate. He lives in Shanghai and has previously visited New York.
Dior F/W in Beijing
Dior released its fall collections here in Beijing today at Nanxincang. This young Hunanese lady was wearing a cute Dior dress from the current spring collection. She was determined that I must not mention her name or position.
Nico and Quiet
Nico and Quiet (their English names) are unexpected. I rarely encounter couples – at least the ones that include two sexes – in which both members look reasonably stylish. Recent graduate Nico, who does take her name from the singer on the first Velvet Underground album, works for the Bank of China, where I have a small account, and keeps a blog. In addition to classic rock and punk, Nico enjoys electronic music. She recently visited Nepal with Quiet and hopes to travel more in the near future.
Sci-Fi Hutong
There are several things very sci-fi about this young fellow I found in the hutongs nearby my place. His whole aura suggests where our world might be headed.
Offset Spectacles
Vince Li is in the Offset Spectacles, a Hong Kong folk rock band. The three members came to Beijing because its rock scene is so far superior to the one in Hong Kong. They have performed in D-22 and other major venues around the city.
Favorite genres of music are Shoegaze and 80s and 90s NYC underground and, of the most well-known Chinese rock bands, he likes PK-14 most.
From the Aisin Gioro
100% Manchu, Mr. Fang is part of the Aisin Gioro, the imperial clan of the Qing Dynasty. He lives right by Gulou Street.
Bespoken Gothwear
Liu Sha would not provide the name of his girlfriend, but he did mention that their clothes were mostly custom-made by a tailor near Dongsi. It was quite a hot day, but they didn’t seem to be sweating even in all that black.
Dropped Crotch
From Hong Kong, Vicky studies business at China University of Political Science and Law. She says that in the school of around 3000, there are about 15 students from Hong Kong. The trendy dropped crotch on these reminds me of homie trousers.
A Hutong Exercise Regimen
On weekends, Yan Jiang often returns to a game from his childhood for exercise. Now working for Beijing Dentsu Advertising Co., Ltd., he grew up in this hutong neighborhood but now lives with his wife near Chaoyang Park. I like the shawl cardigan and cap.
In a League of Her Own
Not long before seeing her at the Burberry party (the post before), I encountered Ivy in the hutongs. Born in Beijing, she grew up outside the Second Ring, she now lives near Nanluoguxiang. At the moment, in addition to studying design and designing, she writes for a range of fashion magazines. Ivy frequently travels abroad, preferring Paris and Tokyo.
Pink Panther and Sponge Bob
From Anqing in Anhui province, He Lulu (23) is now at the Communication University of China, studying to be a TV host. Despite all of the Western cartoon characters she is wearing, her favorite of all time is Hello Kitty. She does dress this way every day. Apparently no one at her University thinks it odd.
Some will accusing me of photographing everything strange I see and neglecting pedestrians who exhibit true good taste. Others will point out that there are whole tracts of Tokyo in which those who don’t mix hot pink with yellow and the Pink Panther with Sponge Bob are treated as lepers. The goal of Stylites remains to catalogue, and ideally profile, the interesting characters stalking the streets of Beijing at this particular juncture in history.
Photos and Tango
Born in Beijing, photographer Anne Li immigrated to England at age nine. After graduating from the London School of Economics with a degree in international studies, she worked at Rothschild as an investment banker for two years. She found out that her heart was elsewhere and took off to study a year of photography in Paris and then three months of tango in Buenos Aires. She is now a freelance photographer here in Beijing, shooting fashion for magazines as well as portraits and more artistic work for herself. In addition to photography, she loves all types of dance, singing karaoke, and partying with friends at Mesh.
Her style seems to have moved pretty far since her days in the square mile, or maybe this was her casual Friday look. The skirt was made by a young designer based in London, Nadia Ivanova and the cardigan is from Primark.
She bought the shoes on Nanluoguxiang, but they are about the only item she has been able to pick up here in Beijing.
